Curated Set of 3: Great Leaders

These three books give a glimpse into the lives of great leaders who rose to the occasion during times of great turmoil.  These complicated figures were known by many, but understood by few.

Includes:

  1. The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson
  2. Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin
  3. Man of Destiny by Alonzo L. Hamby

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. The Splendid and the Vile takes readers out of today’s political dysfunction and back to a time of true leadership, when, in the face of unrelenting horror, Churchill’s eloquence, courage, and perseverance bound a country, and a family, together.

Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Lincoln's political genius in Team of Rivals, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals.

As the distinguished historian Alonzo Hamby argues in this authoritative biography, Man of Destiny, FDR's record as president was more mixed than we are often led to believe. Hamby documents FDR's final months in intimate detail, claiming that his perseverance, despite his serious illness, not only shaped his presidency, but must be counted as one of the twentieth century's great feats of endurance.
