The Seasonal Edit - Quarterly Subscription

The Seasonal Edit subscription program brings three curated titles to your door every season! Each book set is curated by our expert curator, Elizabeth Lane, and wrapped in Juniper Books jacket designs that are exclusive to subscription members.

About the Fall Edit 2020
This season's box includes three critically acclaimed novels: The Dragons, The Giant, The Women: A Memoir by Wayétu Moore, Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami, and Friends and Strangers by J. Courtney Sullivan. The book set comes wrapped in custom jackets featuring aspen leaves gently floating across a painterly backdrop of burnished reds.

Along with the book set, we will be making a donation to PEN America for each subscription.

The novels in this season's box, you will receive three excellent books that are diverse in both subject, writing style and scope. In a present reality that is increasingly stranger than fiction, we’ve found there is no better time to pick up a book and dive into another’s story. As writer Neil Gaiman has so wisely said, “Fiction gives us empathy: it puts us inside the minds of other people, gives us the gifts of seeing the world through their eyes. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.”

This sentiment sums up why we are so honored to send out our Seasonal Edit each quarter -- a selection of books that we hope rounds out those already on your nightstand or TBR pile. We hope to bring you new voices, new perspectives and celebrate the stories that connect us, author and reader alike, bonded by the written word.

The books in the Fall Edit are published by Europa Editions, Graywolf Press, and Alfred A. Knopf. Choose your look! Every seasonal box comes with the original publisher jackets as well as our exclusive jackets.

More about the books:

The Dragons, The Giant, The Women: A Memoir by Wayétu Moore

While we usually stick with fiction for The Edit, I just couldn’t pass by an opportunity to highlight this stunning memoir by author Wayétu Moore, author of She Would Be King which we included in our very first selection of books in December 2018, and told the story of Liberia re-imagined through a lens of history and magical realism.
Yet here, in her memoir, Moore recounts her own story – fleeing Liberia at age 5 during the first Liberian Civil War, and then leaping ahead a quarter century to her early adulthood in Brooklyn, as she reconciles her past and the legacy of war for both her family and her homeland.  A compelling section is then written in the voice of her mother, a technique which beautifully rounds out Moore’s story.

Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami

Breasts and Eggs tells the story of three working class women: the thirty-year-old Natsuko, her older sister, Makiko, and Makiko’s daughter Midoriko. In the first part of the novel, Makiko has traveled to Tokyo in search of an affordable breast enhancement procedure. She is accompanied by Midoriko, who has recently grown silent, finding herself unable to voice the vague yet overwhelming pressures associated with puberty. Her silence proves a catalyst for each woman to confront her fears and frustrations.
On another hot summer’s day ten years later, Natsuko, on a journey back to her native city, struggles with her own indeterminate identity as she confronts anxieties about growing old alone, without a child. With vignettes that are equally wry, humorous, emotionally complex and riveting, Kawakami’s stunning novel explores core aspects of womanhood, touching upon issues surrounding reproductive rights, friendship, class and the female body. A phenomenon in her native Japan, Breasts and Eggs is Mieko Kawakami’s first novel to be published in English.

Friends and Strangers by J. Courtney Sullivan

Elisabeth, an accomplished journalist and new mother, is struggling to adjust to life in a small town after nearly twenty years in New York City. Alone in the house with her infant son, she feels uneasy, unmotivated and adrift. Enter Sam, a senior at the local women’s college, whom Elisabeth hires to babysit. Sam is struggling to decide between the path she’s always planned on and a romantic entanglement that threatens her ambition. In short order, the two grow close. But when Sam finds an unlikely kindred spirit in Elisabeth’s father-in-law, the true differences between the women’s lives become starkly revealed and a betrayal has devastating consequences.
A remarkable exploration of motherhood, power dynamics, and privilege in its many forms, Friends and Strangers reveals how a single year can shape the course of a life.

About the Donation

In the three months since our last shipment of The Edit, the world has changed dramatically. Many individuals are struggling, as are many organizations. For The Fall Edit you hold in your hands, we decided to forego the non-book items we traditionally would have included in the subscription box. For each subscription, we are making a donation to a non-profit we believe in - PEN America

PEN America, founded in 1922, is a non-profit organization that works to defend and celebrate free expression in the United States and worldwide through the advancement of literature and human rights. At Juniper Books, we recognize that it takes a global village of writers, readers, artists, publishers, and organizations including PEN, to keep the past, present, and future of books alive and well.
